Blue Streaks battle out of 2-0 deficit to secure point for each team
Oct. 10, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team had visiting John Carroll University on the ropes Friday (Oct. 10) afternoon at Marietta Field by scoring two early goals, but the Blue Streaks battled back to tie the game in regulation and then the contest ended in a 2-2 tie after a pair of scoreless overtime periods. The Pioneers improved to 2-8-2 overall and 0-1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll moved to 8-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the OAC.
Marietta senior forward Jessica Martinez (Strongsville) put her team ahead 1-0 in the 12th minute when she lofted a shot from 20-yards out over the John Carroll keeper's head and into the back of the net. The goal was her fourth of the year and 25th of her career.
The Pioneers then made it 2-0 in the 31st minute. Freshman midfielder Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) took possession of the ball deep in Pioneer territory and carried the ball down the far side of the field in transition. Muench took a shot from 20-yards away that also found room beyond the out-stretched hands of the keeper and into the back of the net. The goal was also her fourth of the year.
John Carroll looked as if it pulled within one in the final seconds of the half, but time ran out before the shot was made and Marietta took a 2-0 lead into intermission after out-shooting John Carroll 6-5 in the half.
The second stanza was a different story, as the Blue Streaks out-shot the Pioneers 19-7. John Carroll finally broke through with a goal in the 47th minute. Eleanor Sovacool sent a cross inside the box to the teammate Elizabeth Daigler, who finished it for her fourth goal of the season.
Marietta had its chance to put the game away in the 76th when a foul in the box produced a penalty kick. The shot, however, curled wide left and the score remained 2-1 in favor of the Pioneers.
John Carroll then tied the game for good in the 86th minute. Erika Eberhardt sent a ball into the box from 10-yards out that was bobbled by Marietta's keeper and found its way across the end line for the game-tying goal and her second of the season.
The two teams then played 20 minutes of overtime with Marietta out-shooting John Carroll 3-0 over that span, but both defenses held strong and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
The Blue Streaks finished with 24 shots, 14 on goal, and added three corner kicks in the game. The Pioneers totaled 16 shots with nine on goal and finished with six corner kicks.
Marietta sophomore Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley) collected 12 saves in the game, while John Carroll's Michelle Zrebiec had six.
The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday (Oct. 15) afternoon when they travel to New Concord, Ohio, for a 4 p.m. OAC match-up with rival Muskingum College. |
