TIFFIN, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s soccer team opened Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play by earning a point in the league standings after a 1-1 tie with host Heidelberg College on Friday (Oct. 3) afternoon. Head Coach Pat Holguin’s Pioneers improved their record to 2-7-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in the OAC. The Student Princes, led by Nick Spell, a 2003 Marietta graduate and former Pioneer assistant, improved to 4-4-3, 0-0-1 in league play.
Heidelberg jumped out on top with a goal in the ninth minute. Ivy Thompson, a Marietta High School product, scored her second goal of the season with the help of a cross from teammate Katelyn McBeath to give the Student Princes an early 1-0 advantage.
Marietta, who dominated, finally broke through in the 83rd minute. A foul just outside the box produced a free kick opportunity for the Pioneers. Freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) tapped the ball back to classmate Tessa Harlow (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne), who then laced a shot over a defender and into the bottom right corner of the goal to knot the game at 1-1. Both teams had their chances during the two overtimes, but the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Marietta out-shot Heidelberg 20-11 in the game and 18-5 in shots on goal. Freshman Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley) finished with four saves in the game, while Heidelberg goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney made 17.
Marietta will continue OAC play on Tuesday (Oct. 7) afternoon when the Pioneers make a trip to Westerville to take on host Otterbein College at 4 p.m. |
