MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime game to the visiting Kenyon College Ladies Wednesday (Oct. 1) afternoon at Marietta Field. The loss brought the Pioneers' record to 2-7 on the season, while Kenyon improved to 3-5.
Freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) scored her third goal of the year only two minutes into the contest. Muench took a bouncing ball off a Kenyon defender and chipped the goalkeeper from 16-yards out to give Marietta a 1-0 advantage. Muench is now tied with two other teammates for the team lead in goals.
Kenyon answered back at the 5:53 mark when midfielder Beth Blackey finished a ball from the top of the box after an errant Pioneer clearance to make the score 1-1. The score remained that way for the rest of regulation. Blackey struck again seven minutes into the first overtime, this time off a free kick from 25-yards out that was just out of the reach of Marietta freshman goalkeeper Sydney Collins (Cincinnati/Country Day).
The Ladies out-shot the Pioneers 29-12 overall and 12-7 in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley) and Collins both finished with five saves on the day. Hetzel played the first half and Collins played the second half and overtime. Kat Powers finished with six saves for Kenyon.
Marietta starts Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play on Friday (Oct. 3) afternoon with a trip to Tiffin to take on Heidelberg College. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. |
