Freshman Chelsea Hennen scored Marietta's goal in the 72nd minute
Sept. 28, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team used a solid, team effort for 90 minutes to defeat visiting Thomas More (Ky.) College, 1-0, Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon in a non-conference match-up at Marietta Field. The win improved the Pioneers' record to 2-6 overall, while the Saints fell to 5-3 on the year.
Neither Marietta nor Thomas More found many chances in the first half, but the action picked up as the teams returned from intermission in the second half. The Pioneers finally broke through in the 72nd minute. Freshman Chelsea Hennen (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) was able to power a shot from 15-yards out past the Saints' keeper and into the upper right corner of the goal to give Marietta the 1-0 advantage. The goal was Hennen's third of the season.
Thomas More followed with a strong offensive attack, but Marietta's defense and sophomore goalkeeper Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley) fought off each opportunity to preserve the shutout and the 1-0 victory.
The Saints out-shot the Pioneers 15-10 overall, including 13-5 in the second half. Thomas More also held an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Hetzel finished with eight saves while improving to 2-2 on the season. Thomas More's Jenna Kramer made five saves in the loss.
