Marietta women's soccer falls 2-1 to host Washington & Jefferson
Freshman Ashley Drehs scores first career goal

Sept. 24, 2008
WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Marietta College women’s soccer team suffered a 2-1, non-conference setback to host Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College Wednesday (Sept. 24) evening. The Pioneers fell to 1-6, while the Presidents improved to 6-2 on the season.

Marietta out-shot Washington & Jefferson 15-14, and both teams collected eight shots on goal in the game.

The Presidents took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Elizabeth Bendick headed a ball past Pioneer sophomore goalkeeper Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley), following a cross from teammate Madison Manius.

Washington & Jefferson extended its lead to 2-0 in the 46th minute after Spencer Ahrenholtz dribbled into the 18-yard box and the fired a shot out of the reach of Hetzel and into the back of the net.

Marietta pulled within a goal, 2-1, in the 86th minute when freshman midfielder Ashley Drehs (Parma/Normandy) converted a loose ball in front of the net into her first goal of the season. The Pioneers had one last chance in the final two minutes but a corner kick led to a shot by senior midfielder Allie Williams (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) that was high, allowing the Presidents to hold on for the one-goal victory.

Hetzel finished with six saves for Marietta, while Washington & Jefferson's Jackie Foltz had seven in the game.

Marietta will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon when the Pioneers play host to Thomas More (Ky.) College in a 12 p.m. kickoff at Marietta Field.
