Marietta women's soccer suffers 3-2 overtime loss at Penn State-Altoona
Freshman Corryn Muench scores first career goal
Sept. 13, 2008
ALTOONA, Pa. — Marietta College freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) scored a goal with just four second to play in regulation to send Saturday (Sept. 13) afternoon's game against host Penn State-Altoona (Pa.) into overtime. The Lions, however, scored a goal early in the extra period to pull out the 3-2 victory. With the win, PSU-Altoona improved to 5-0, while Marietta fell to 0-5.
Marietta found itself trailing 1-0 in the 7th minute when Danielle Ivancich punched in a shot from the left side of the box following a pass from Meredith Barcia. The Pioneers tied the game at 1-1 in the 49th minute. Senior Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) sent a shot into the middle of the box that was deflected by a Lion player and into the back of the net. The goal, which was assisted by Chelsea Hennen (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School), was Martinez's third of the season.
Danika Mull broke the 1-1 tie with a goal in the 67th minute. She was assisted Emily Reimold. It looked as if the Lions would escape with a 2-1 win until Muench beat the keeper from inside the box in the final seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime. The goal was the first of Muench's career.
Reimold and Mull teamed up again, just over two minutes into the extra session to score the Lions' third goal and give PSU-Altoona the 3-2 victory, its first ever win over Marietta. The Pioneers had won the previous four meetings.
PSU-Altoona out-shot Marietta 13-11 overall but the Pioneers held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Collins (Cincinnati/Country Day) finished with four saves in the loss.
Marietta's game against Albright (Pa.), slated for Sunday (Sept. 14), was canceled earlier in the weekend, so the team is back in action on Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon when the Pioneers play host to Saint Vincent (Pa.) College. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. and will be part of a women's and men's doubleheader at Marietta Field. The Marietta men will follow at 3 p.m. |
