Sept. 10, 2008
WOOSTER, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team had its first road test of the 2008 season on Wednesday (Sept. 10) afternoon when the Pioneers visited the College of Wooster for a non-conference match-up. The young Pioneers held the regionally-ranked Fighting Scots scoreless for the first half, but a lone Wooster goal early in the second half was the difference in a 1-0 victory for the home team. Marietta fell to 0-4, while Wooster improved to 4-0.
Wooster, who had out-scored its first three opponents by a total of 10-1 and out-shot them by 51-12 margin, dominated 27-5 in overall shots. Marietta, however, trailed only 5-3 in shots on goal for the game.
The Fighting Scots' Sara Dresser accounted for the game's goal when she headed a ball past Pioneer freshman goalkeeper Sidney Collins (Cincinnati/Country Day) in the 57th minute. The goal, which came directly off a free kick by Kristin McCall, was Dresser's second of the season.
Collins stopped the Fighting Scots' only shot on goal in the first half and finished with four saves total. Alix Hoffman had three saves for Wooster in the win.
Marietta freshmen Tessa Harlow (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne) and Chelsea Hennen (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) both had two shots, while sophomore Marsha Hupp (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) had the fifth.
The Pioneers are back in action this weekend when they play a pair of games in Altoona, Pa. Marietta will take on host Penn State-Altoona on Saturday (Sept. 13) at 4 p.m. and then battle Albright (Pa.) on Sunday at 2 p.m. |
