MARIETTA, Ohio — Denison defeated Thiel, 76-58, to capture the 23rd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament Sunday (Nov. 25) afternoon on the campus of Marietta College. The Pioneers picked up their first win of the year with a 49-43 victory over New Jersey City in the consolation game.

Denison 76, Thiel 58
The Denison women’s basketball team cruised to another double-digit victory en route to capturing the 23rd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot. The Big Red defeated the Tomcats from Thiel College, 76-58, Sunday (Nov. 25) afternoon to improve to 3-2. Thiel drops to 1-2.

Carolyn Simpson scored 21 points and collected eight rebounds on her way to earning the Turkey Shoot's MVP. Teammates Ellen O’Brien and Sarah Perrine joined Simpson on the All-Tournament Team. Perrine scored 11 points and had six rebounds, and O’Brien added 10 points and seven assists in Sunday’s championship game.

Amber Bodrick, who was also named to the All-Tournament Team, led Thiel with 27 points for the second straight night.

Denison finished 26-of-60 (.433) from the field, 5-of-16 (.313) from the three-point line, and 19-of-27 (.704) from the line. Thiel finished 21-of-56 (.375) from the field, 3-of-13 (.231) from the three-point line and 13-of-19 (.684) from the line.

Marietta 49, New Jersey City 43
The Marietta College women’s basketball team earned its first victory of the season by defeating New Jersey City University, 49-43, in the consolation game of the 23rd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot on Sunday (Nov. 25) afternoon. The victory is the first under first-year head coach Jill Meiring. With the win, the Pioneers improve their record to 1-3, while the Gothic Knights drop to 1-3.

The two teams were tied 22-22 at the half. The second half was back and forth with New Jersey City leading by as many as seven with 13 minutes left on the clock. The Pioneers then chipped away at the lead by reestablishing their inside game. Marietta led by as many as eight down the stretch and held on to secure the six-point victory.

Sophomore forward Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) led the Pioneers in scoring with 21 points and collected six rebounds. Junior guard Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) played a key roll, racking up 12 assists and collecting seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) scored 10 points giving her a total 31 points for the weekend, earning her a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Senior Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) scored 10 points and added six rebounds. Pagenhardt passed Brenda Brdicka and moved into fifth place on Marietta’s all-time scoring list with a total of 1,113 points.

For the Gothic Knights, Alaia Robinson set the tone with 11 points and collected 19 total rebounds. Robinson, who earned All-Tournament Team honors, totaled 39 rebounds for the weekend, setting a new Turkey Shoot record. Ohio Wesleyan's Jill Myers set the previous record of 37 in 1987. 

For the game, the Pioneers finished 20-of-47 (.426) from the field, 3-of-8 (.375) from the three-point line and 6-of-19 (.316) from the free throw line. New Jersey City finished 17-of-59 (.288) from the field, 2-of-21 (.095) from the three-point line, and 7-of-15 (.467) from the free throw line.

Marietta is back in action on Wednesday (Nov. 28) evening when it plays host to Bethany College. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Thiel (Pa.) turned a 37-34 halftime advantage into a 79-62 route of host Marietta College in the featured first round game of the 23rd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament Saturday (Nov. 24) evening. In the second semifinal, Denison rolled past New Jersey City, 80-56, to set up a showdown between the Big Red and the Tomcats in Sunday's (Nov. 25) final at 3 p.m. Marietta will take on New Jersey City in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Thiel 79, Marietta 62
Thiel (Pa.) College's second-half run helped it defeat Marietta College, 79-62, in the first round of the 23rd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot . The loss drops the Pioneers’ record to 0-3 while Thiel improved to 1-1.

Marietta shot 25-of-72 (.347) from the floor, including 4-of-17 (.235) from long range. The Pioneers, who turned the ball over 17 times and were out-rebounded 42-37, went 8-of-10 (.800) from the line.

Junior guard Amanda Carraher led Marietta in scoring with 22 points. Senior guard Justine Pagenhardt chipped in with 13 points. Senior forward Vanessa Nicholls had a team-high six rebounds, while senior forward Stephanie Dowd and sophomore forward Jamie Beckett both had five rebounds each.

Thiel, which shot 28-of-57 (.347) from the field, including 7-of-16 (.438) from beyond the arc, was paced by junior guard Amber Bodrick with 27 points, while fellow junior guard Jena Cook followed with 17 points. The Tomcats turned the ball over 21 times and finished 16-of-22 (.727) from the line.

Denison 80, New Jersey City 56
Denison University jumped out to a big first-half lead and cruised to an 80-56 victory over New Jersey City University in the second game of the 23rd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Saturday (Nov. 24) night. The win improved the Big Red's record to 2-2, while the Gothic Knights fell to 1-2.

Sarah Perrine scored a team-high 19 points to lead Denison, which shot 31-of-70 (.443) from the floor, 6-of-21 (.286) from long range and 12-of-16 (.750). Carolyn Simpson added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Leslie Marshall contributed 12 points for the Big Red, who had just nine turnovers.

The Gothic Knights shot 22-of-67 (.328) from the floor, including 4-of-14 (.286) from deep, to go along with 8-of-10 (.800) from the line. New Jersey City out-rebounded Denison 47-39 and finished with 20 turnovers.

Angela Fitzgerald paced New Jersey City with 19 points and 11 boards. In addition, Tania Greenleaf pitched in with 15 points and Alaia Robinson had nine points and 20 rebounds.
