Carraher sets single game three-point record and scores career-high 28 points
Feb. 13, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — Junior guard Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) led the Lady Pioneers with a career-high 28 points, while setting the school's single-game record for three-point field goals made with eight and three-point field goals attempted with 15, to help the Marietta College women's basketball team rout visiting Muskingum College, 84-67, Wednesday (Feb. 13) night at Ban Johnson Arena.
The win improves Marietta's record to 5-16 overall and 2-13 in the OAC. Muskingum falls to 9-13 overall and 3-12 in league play. Not since the 2004-05 season had the Lady PIoneers won two straight Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) games. Ironically, those two games also came against both Heidelberg College and Muskingum.
Marietta's 84 points was also the highest total for the team since opening the 2001-02 season with a 90-85 victory over Washington College of Chestertown, Maryland. The Lady Pioneer's also set the school's single-game team record for three-point field goals, hitting 13-of-23 from deep.
Junior guard Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) aided Carraher's performance with 19 points, while senior guard Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) scored 15 points and dished out a game-high eight assists. Sophomore Whitney Swain (Belpre/Warren Local) came off the bench to score 10 points and collect five rebounds. Sophomore Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) collected a game-high 10 rebounds and scored six points in the win.
Jessica McKenzie led Muskingum with 25 points and eight rebounds. Tiffany Yoeul came off the bench to score 12 points. Jessica Brink scored 11 points in the loss.
The two teams traded baskets for the better part of the first half. Carraher's first three of the night tied the game at 12-12 and also took away what would be Muskingum's last lead of the evening. Marietta stretched its lead to 10 points, 28-18, with 5:41 left in the half. Muskingum battled back to tie the game at 33-33, before Carraher hit another three to reclaim the lead for Marietta. Driscoll added another basket to give the Pioneers a 38-33 lead at the half.
Marietta came out of the locker room firing and its lead extended all the way to 20 points. Every Muskingum basket in the half was answered by a Marietta bucket, primarily from Carraher or Driscoll. Pagenhardt also made some key shots down the stretch to keep the lead in double digits. Marietta went on to win the game easily, 84-67, on the record setting night.
Marietta finished 30-of-55 (.545) from the field, 13-of-23 (.565) from behind the arc and 11-of-16 (.688) from the free throw line. Muskingum finished 26-of-60 (.433) from the field, 4-of-13 (.308) from three and 11-of-14 (.786) from the free throw line. The Pioneers out rebounded the Muskies 33-31 and both teams committed 14 turnovers.
