Lady Pioneers fall at Capital 70-50
Carraher and Beckett score 16 points each in loss

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team fell to Capital University, 70-50, Wednesday (Feb. 6) night in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) match-up at the Capital Center. The Pioneer women fall to 3-16 overall and 0-13 in the OAC. With the win, Capital improves to 13-7 overall and 7-6 in the OAC.

Junior Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) and sophomore Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) led the Lady Pioneers with 16 points each. Junior guard Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) scored seven points and dished out four assists. Stephanie Dowd (Willoughby/Willoughby South) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Capital was led in scoring by Kristen Richardson with 24 points. Caitlin Elsass scored 14 points and collected nine rebounds. Tiffany Withers scored 13 points, while Heather McAlphin scored seven points, dished out eight assists and grabbed five rebounds.

Marietta led early on the fuel of three Carraher three-pointers in the early minutes of the first half. Capital battled back to take a four-point lead near the end of the half. Another three by Carraher again sparked the Pioneers to regain the lead at 26-22. Capital ended the half on a 6-0 run to take a 28-26 lead into halftime. The Crusaders then took control of the game, as they outscored the Lady Pioneers 32-11 over the first 10 minutes of the second to lead 60-37. Capital would stretch its lead to 26 points before cruising to the 70-50 victory.

For the game, Marietta finished 18-of-47 (.383) from the field, 6-of-16 (.375) from behind the arc and 8-of-12 (.667) from the free throw line. Capital finished the game 28-of-60 (.467) from the field, 2-of-6 (.333) from three and 12-of-19 (.632) from the free throw line. Capital held the edge in rebounds with 42-28. The Lady Crusaders also won the turnover battle, committing 23 to the Pioneers’ 30.

The Lady Pioneers return to action Saturday (Feb. 9) afternoon against visiting Heidelberg College at Fenton Court. The tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
