Marietta women fall at home to No. 25 Capital 90-51
Lady Pioneers connect on eight three pointers in loss

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team could not overcome 15 first-half turnovers as it lost to the No. 25 Capital Crusaders, 90-51, on Saturday (Jan. 5) afternoon at Fenton Court. The loss drops the Lady Pioneers record to 3-8 overall and 0-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). With the win, Capital improves its record to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the OAC.
Leading the way for Marietta was senior guard Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) added 15 points and five assists. Sophomore Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) scored 12 points and collected five rebounds. Fellow sophomore Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) had five rebounds and scored four points.
Heather McAlpin led the Crusaders with 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Kristen Richardson scored 14 points and Chelsea Ruoff added 13 points. Caitlin Elsass posted a double double with 11 points and collected a game high 10 rebounds. 50 of Capital’s 91 points came in the paint and 23 came off turnovers.
For the game, Marietta finished 16-of-55 (.291) from the field, 8-of-24 (.333) from behind the arc, and 11-of-21 (.524) from the free throw line. Capital finished 33-of-65 (.508) from the field, 3-of-8 (.375) from three, and 21-of-31 (.677) from the free throw line. The Crusaders dominated the boards, out rebounding the Pioneers 50-33. Marietta finished with 19 turnovers, while Capital had 14.
Marietta will hit the road on Wednesday (Jan. 9) evening to take on OAC rival Muskingum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
