#10 Ohio Northern sweeps Marietta volleyball 3-0

ADA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team fell on the road in straight sets to Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe and host #10 Ohio Northern University Saturday (Oct. 11) afternoon. The Polar Bears won 25-19, 25-14, 25-17 to improve to 18-4 overall and 4-0 OAC. The Pioneers fell to 13-10 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Marietta's offense was led by sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) with 11 kills in 26 attempts. Freshmen right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls) and outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) both added eight kills in the match. Senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) dished out 29 assists to increase her career total to 2,636.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College freshman outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) delivered clutch, back-to-back services aces to swing the momentum in favor of the Pioneers and propel them to a 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 27-25, 15-25, 15-13) victory over rival and visiting Muskingum College Tuesday (Oct. 7) night at Ban Johnson Arena. The victory improved Marietta's record to 13-9 overall and 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Fighting Muskies fell to 16-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Weissling toed the service line with Marietta trailing 12-10 in game five and with Muskingum carrying the momentum from a mid-game run and a game-four victory. She quickly turned the tide, however, with a pair of jump-served aces to knot the game up at 12. After a Muskies' timeout, the visitors were able to take a one-point advantage before Pioneers' sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) tied the game at 13 with a kill. Schoener and senior middle hitter Sarah Vadaj (Streetsboro/Kent Roosevelt) then combined to put Marietta on the doorstep of victory with a block at the net. The Pioneers clinched the win one point later after a Muskies attack error.

The Pioneers dropped their record to 12-9, 0-2 in the OAC. The Cardinals improved to 6-14, 1-1 in league play.
Freshman outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) led Marietta's offensive attack with 13 kills, while freshman right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls) added nine kills and sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) had eight kills in the match. MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Saturday (Sept. 27) afternoon’s non-conference match-up with visiting Ursuline College only to fall 3-2 (14-25, 16-25, 25-23, 27-25, 15-10) at Ban Johnson Arena. The loss dropped Marietta’s record to 12-8 overall, while Ursuline improved to 8-10 on the year.
Four Pioneer hitters finished with double-digit kills in the match. Freshman right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls) had a career-high 16 kills to lead the team. Freshman outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) added 14 kills, while senior middle blocker Sarah Vadaj (Streetsboro/Kent Roosevelt) and freshman middle blocker Jessie Blackley (Aurora) both added 11 kills.

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Marietta College volleyball team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Tuesday (Sept. 23) night's non-conference match-up at Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College. The Pioneers then held off a Presidents' rally to escape with a 3-2 (25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 20-25, 15-10) victory. The win improved Marietta's record to 12-6 on the season, which matched its win total from 2007. Washington & Jefferson fell to 5-5 in 2008.
Three Pioneers hitters finished with double-digit kills in the win, which was the first for Marietta in three tries on an opponent's home floor. Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto), who entered the week ranked third among Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) players in kills per game (3.48), paced the team with 15 kills, while freshman outside hitter Jaimie Hartline (North Canton/Glen Oak), who was ranked sixth in the same category (3.04 kpg), added 14 kills. MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team pieced together a pair of impressive wins on Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon to capture the 2008 Pioneer Classic at Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers advanced to the championship game after a 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-13) victory over Ohio Valley (W.Va.) University in the morning. Marietta then avenged its only loss of the weekend by topping Ohio Dominican University in three games (25-15, 25-17, 25-21) in the afternoon to finish the four-team tournament 3-1 and improve to 11-6 on the season.
Junior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted) was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament for her effort in the four matches. Holzworth was joined on the All-Tournament Team by senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) and sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto).

The Marietta College volleyball team continued it 2008 season on Friday (Sept. 19) evening by playing host to Ohio Dominican University, Ohio Valley (W.Va.) University and Salem (N.C.) College for the Pioneer Classic on Fenton Court. The Pioneers opened the four-team tournament with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-19) victory over Salem. Marietta then fell 3-1 (25-15, 25-27, 25-22, 25-17) to Ohio Dominican to move its overall record to 9-6 on the season.
The Pioneers made quick work of the Spirits (3-9) in the first match, out-hitting them .246 to .098 in the win. Freshman outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto), who was seeing her first action since the opening weekend due to an injury, paced the team will 12 kills in just two games. Freshman

MARIETTA, Ohio — For the second time in four days, Marietta College needed five games
but was able to defeat Bethany (W.Va.) College in non-conference volleyball action. The latest victory came Tuesday (Sept. 16) night in front of the home crowd at Ban Johnson Arena, as the Pioneers won 25-16, 16-25, 25-19, 26-28, 15-9 to improve to 8-5 on the season. The Bison fell to 2-9.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) and freshman right side hitter Jaimie Hartline (North Canton/Glen Oak), as well as senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark), all had career-best performances in the victory. Schoener collected a team-high and a career-high 23 kills, while Hartline added a career-high 22 kills. In addition, Shirk, who now sits in fourth place on the school's all-time assist list (2,316), dished out a career-high 59 assists.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team wrapped up its weekend at the Case Western Reserve University Tournament Saturday (Sept. 13) afternoon with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-15, 15-9) victory over Bethany (W.Va.) College and a 3-0 (17-25, 13-25, 23-25) loss to host Case Western Reserve. With the split, the Pioneers finished the tournament 2-2 and improved to 7-5 on the season.
Senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) ignited the offensive with 37 assists and four service aces against Bethany. Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) and freshman right side hitter Jaimie Hartline (North Canton/Glen Oak) both led the attack with 19 kills. The mark set a new career high for Schoener and matched a career high for Hartline.

The Pioneers opened its third tournament of the season with a 3-0 (23-25, 19-25, 20-25) non-conference loss to John Carroll University. Marietta then ended the night with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-17) victory over Waynesburg (Pa.) University to improve to 6-4 on the year.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) led the Pioneers’ offensive attack in both matches and has now posted a team high in kills in each of the four matches she has played this season. Schoener finished with 14 kills in 32 attempts against the Blue Streaks and then added 11 more kills in 38 attempts against the Yellow Jackets.

Teams will be raising money to help fight the cause of breast cancer

MARIETTA, Ohio — On Tuesday, Oct. 7, Marietta College and Muskingum College volleyball, two long time Ohio Athletic Conference rivals, will go head-to-head on Fenton Court at 7 p.m. This fall, however, the Pioneers and Fighting Muskies will also unite for a much more important battle, the fight against breast cancer, as they will Dig for the Cure.
For the second straight year, Marietta volleyball will partner with the Columbus Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in an effort to raise awareness and funds to help fight the cause of breast cancer.

LEXINGTON, Va. — The 2008 Marietta College volleyball team took to the road for the first time on Friday (Sept. 5) evening when Head Coach Ray Costa took Pioneers on a familiar trek to Lexington, Va., to play a pair of matches at the Washington & Lee University Invitational. Costa was the assistant coach with the Generals before taking over Marietta’s program last season.
Marietta, playing without two injured starters, opened with a 3-1 (18-25, 28-30, 25-20, 23-25) loss to NCAA Division III Dickinson (Pa.) College. The Pioneers then bounced back to top NAIA foe Southern Virginia University 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23) to improve its record to 4-2 on the season.

The Pioneers began the morning with a tough, five-game (23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 13-15) loss to Grove City (Pa.) College. Marietta bounced back with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-20) victory over Oberlin for the second day in a row to finish the tournament 3-1.
Senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) dished out a game-high 56 assists in the loss to Grove City. Freshman outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) paced the team with 23 kills, while freshman outside hitter Jaimie Hartline (North Canton/Glen Oak) added 17 kills in the loss. The Pioneers opened the day with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-21) victory over Oberlin College and then capped the night with a 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 25-14) win over Thiel College from Greenville, Pa.
Marietta freshman Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) paced the offensive attack in both matches. The outside hitter finished with 17 kills against Oberlin and then collected 22 more versus Thiel. She also added five service aces against the Tomcats.

Pioneers receive national honor for third straight year

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team has once again been honored for its exceptional performance in the classroom as a recipient of the 2007-08 Game Plan/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award.
It marks the third straight year that the Pioneers have received this honor. Marietta was one of 62 NCAA Division III schools to earn the award for the 2007-08 school year. In total, 212 collegiate programs met the requirements for the award in 2007-08.
