Marietta volleyball falls 3-0 to Heidelberg in OAC opener
Pioneers take on Ursuline College at 5 p.m.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team opened Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-26, 25-17) loss to first place Heidelberg College Saturday (Sept. 27) afternoon at Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers fell to 12-7, 0-1 in the OAC, while the Student Princes improved to 17-3, 3-0 in league play.
Freshmen right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls) and outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto), who added a team-high two services aces, paced Marietta’s offensive attack with 10 kills each. In addition, sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) added eight kills in the loss. Senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) finished with 26 assists in the match.
Junior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted) led the defense with 17 digs. Weissling and senior defensive specialist Brittany Papili (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) both contributed seven digs, while Shirk and junior defensive specialist Katy Williams (Richmond, Ind.) both added five digs. Freshman Jessie Blackley (Aurora) added to the defense with two block assists in the match.
Marietta is back in action this evening when it takes on Ursuline College at 5 p.m.
