WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Marietta College volleyball team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Tuesday (Sept. 23) night's non-conference match-up at Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College. The Pioneers then held off a Presidents' rally to escape with a 3-2 (25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 20-25, 15-10) victory. Senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark), ranked fourth among OAC setters averaging 9.53 assists, handed out 49 assists in the match. She has now compiled 640 assists in 2008 and 2,447 assists in her career, which ranks third all-time at Marietta.

Junior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted), who leads the OAC in aces, added five more to her season total to give her 50. Hartline added three more service aces in the match. Holzworth, ranked fourth in the OAC in digs per game (4.95), also finished with a team-high 30 digs, while senior defensive specialist Brittany Papili (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) had 15 digs.
