Marietta volleyball tops visiting Bethany 3-2
Schoener and Hartline combine for 45 of team's 71 kills in win

MARIETTA, Ohio — For the second time in four days, Marietta College needed five games but was able to defeat Bethany (W.Va.) College in non-conference volleyball action. The latest victory came Tuesday (Sept. 16) night in front of the home crowd at Ban Johnson Arena, as the Pioneers won 25-16, 16-25, 25-19, 26-28, 15-9 to improve to 8-5 on the season. The Bison fell to 2-9.

Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) and freshman right side hitter Jaimie Hartline (North Canton/Glen Oak), as well as senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark), all had career-best performances in the victory. Schoener collected a team-high and a career-high 23 kills, while Hartline added a career-high 22 kills. In addition, Shirk, who now sits in fourth place on the school's all-time assist list (2,316), dished out a career-high 59 assists. Junior defensive specialist Katy Williams (Richmond, Ind.) helped seal the fifth game with a pair of consecutive service aces and finished with five, which was a career-high. Senior defensive specialist Brittany Papili (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) added four service aces in the win.

Defensively, junior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted) led the team with 15 digs, while Papili added 11 digs. Marietta also compiled 10 block assists, including three by sophomore middle blocker Alex Edelbrock (Findlay/Van Buren Local) and two by senior middle blocker Sarah Vadaj (Streetsboro/Kent Roosevelt), sophomore right side hitter Tasha Williams (Little Hocking/Warren Local) and freshman right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls).

Marietta is back in action on Friday (Sept 19) afternoon when it plays host to Ohio Dominican, Ohio Valley (W.Va.) and Salem (N.C.) for the Pioneer Classic.
