Pioneer volleyball finishes Case Western Tournament with win over Bison and loss to host Spartans
Marietta improves to 7-5 on the season

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team wrapped up its weekend at the Case Western Reserve University Tournament Saturday (Sept. 13) afternoon with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-15, 15-9) victory over Bethany (W.Va.) College and a 3-0 (17-25, 13-25, 23-25) loss to host Case Western Reserve. With the split, the Pioneers finished the tournament 2-2 and improved to 7-5 on the season.

Senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) ignited the offensive with 37 assists and four service aces against Bethany. Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) and freshman right side hitter Jaimie Hartline (North Canton/Glen Oak) both led the attack with 19 kills. The mark set a new career high for Schoener, who was named to the All-Tournment Team, and matched a career high for Hartline. Senior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted) and senior defensive specialist Brittany Papili (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) both added three service aces in the win.

Defensively, three Pioneers finished with double-digit digs. Hartline posted a career-high 18 digs, Holzworth added 14 digs and Shirk had 12 digs. In addition, the Pioneers totaled 13 total blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Alex Edelbrock (Findlay/Van Buren Local) had six total blocks, while Shirk added five total blocks.

Schoener once again paced Marietta with 14 kills and senior middle blocker Sarah Vadaj (Streetsboro/Kent Roosevelt) added six kills in the match against Case Western Reserve. Shirk handed out 26 assists and had one service ace in the loss. Holzworth, who also had one service ace, collected a team-high 11 digs. In addition, Edelbrock finished with two total blocks.

Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (Sept. 16) evening when it once again battles the Bison of Bethany College. This time, the action will take place on Fenton Court and begin at 7:30 p.m. Live stats will be available at http://pioneers.marietta.edu/livestats/xlive.htm.
