Marietta volleyball falls to John Carroll and defeats Waynesburg at Case Western Tournament
Pioneers total 13 blocks in the win over the Yellow Jackets

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Case Western Reserve University Tournament Friday (Sept. 12) evening. The Pioneers opened its third tournament of the season with a 3-0 (23-25, 19-25, 20-25) non-conference loss to John Carroll University. Marietta then ended the night with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-17) victory over Waynesburg (Pa.) University to improve to 6-4 on the year.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Schoener (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) led the Pioneers’ offensive attack in both matches and has now posted a team high in kills in each of the four matches she has played this season. Schoener finished with 14 kills in 32 attempts against the Blue Streaks and then added 11 more kills in 38 attempts against the Yellow Jackets. Freshman outside hitter Jaimie Hartline (North Canton/Glen Oak) contributed seven kills versus John Carroll and 10 kills versus Waynesburg. Senior setter Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) totaled 70 assists on the night, dishing out 32 against the Blue Streaks and 38 against the Yellow Jackets.
Senior defensive specialist Brittany Papili (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) had a team-high 14 digs, while senior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted) had nine digs in the opener. Holzworth then paced the squad with 20 digs and junior defensive specialist Katy Williams (Richmond, Ind.) added 11 digs in the nightcap.
Marietta’s work at the net produced 13 total blocks against Waynesburg. Sophomore Alex Edelbrock (Findlay/Van Buren Local) finished with two solo blocks and six block assists. In addition, Schoener added four block assists and senior middle blocker Sarah Vadaj (Streetsboro/Kent Roosevelt) and freshman right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls) both collected three block assists.
The Pioneers will close out the tournament with two more matches on Saturday (Sept. 13) afternoon. Marietta will play Bethany (W.Va.) College at 11 a.m. and then host Case Western Reserve at 12:30 p.m. |
