Derek Stanley
Head Coach
Derek Stanley, a native of Pataskala, Ohio, begins his sixth season as Marietta College's head track & field and cross country coach.
In the fall of 2008, Stanley led his men and women’s cross country teams to a seventh and fifth place finish, respectively, at the OAC Championships, hosted by Marietta at the Broughton Nature and Wildlife Education Area. Individually, junior Randi Robertson placed third in the women’s race, the second best finish for a Pioneer women in school history.
Stanley guided three athletes to individual titles at the 2008 OAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where the women took fifth and the men placed sixth. Junior Derek Carpenter won the men’s hammer throw for the second straight year, while junior Tiffany Kovacevich took home the women’s crown in the event. In addition, sophomore Chad Byers won the men’s javelin throw. Six other Pioneers earned All-OAC honors at the outdoor event. Junior Brian Pallini highlighted Marietta’s performance at the 2008 OAC Indoor Championships by winning the men’s weight throw. Seven Pioneers picked up All-OAC honors at the indoor championships, where Marietta’s women placed seventh and the men placed eighth.
Stanley also had three athletes win individual titles and four All-OAC honorees at the 2007 OAC Outdoor Championships. Sophomore Derek Carpenter and senior Rachel Forman won the hammer throw, while freshman Zach Gay took home the high jump title. In addition, two Pioneers earned All-OAC honors at the 2007 Indoor Championships. In 2006, Stanley had four runners, including Jessi Larrison, who won the 800m title, earn All-OAC honors at the Outdoor Championships, which was hosted at Don Drum Stadium. During indoor, Larrison earned All-OAC in the 500m dash, taking third overall.
In 2005, Stanley guided senior All-American Chris Taylor to an eighth-place finish in the high jump at the NCAA D-III Indoor Track and Field Championship. He is the first Pioneer in recent history to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Stanley came to Marietta from Bluffton College, where he served as the head men and women's track and cross country coach since 2001. During his time at Bluffton, a member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, he expanded the squad size from six to 26 female athletes and 15 to 32 male athletes. Stanley coached four individual HCAC champions in 2002 and the freshman of the year in the HCAC in 2003. In addition, Stanley's women's cross country team earned Academic All-American status in 2001 and 2002, and his men's cross country team earned the honor in 2002.
Stanley received his bachelor's of business administration from Tiffin University in 1999 and his master's in education from Bowling Green State University in 2002. While at Tiffin, he qualified to the indoor NAIA national championship meet in Lincoln, Neb., where he participated on the 4x400 meter relay team.
Stanley remained at Tiffin as a coach for two years following his graduation. During his time at Tiffin, Stanley coached numerous NAIA national qualifiers in indoor and outdoor track & field. He also played an integral part in expanding the roster size from 15 to 40 runners.

Brent Wilkerson
Assistant Coach
Brent Wilkerson begins his third year as an assistant coach with the Marietta College track & field program and second as a full-time member of the department. Wilkerson is the first full-time assistant in the history of the program.
"This position is essential in the development of our program especially in the recruiting aspect," Head Coach Derek Stanley said. "I feel Brent has the qualities to provide what is needed to help bring in a high quality student-athlete to Marietta and make us a top contender in the OAC. I am continually impressed with the energy and enthusiasm he brings on a daily basis."
Wilkerson, a 2006 graduate of Wilmington College, was a four-year standout with the Quakers, earning eight varsity letters in track and a host of conference, regional and national honors.
Wilkerson, a Cincinnati native, was a two-time All-American, anchoring the 4x400m relay team. He accumulated 15 All-OAC and 13 All-Ohio honors during his collegiate career. As a junior, Wilkerson was voted the Ohio Athletic Conference’s Don Frail Most Outstanding Track Athlete at the Indoor Championships, which were held in Marietta. At the meet, he won the 300m and 400m dash and anchored the winning 4x400m relay team. As a senior, Wilkerson provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the 400m dash.
"I am very pleased with the opportunity to be the assistant track & field coach at Marietta College," said Wilkerson. "While I am a young coach, I feel 100 percent prepared and confident for our upcoming season."
As a graduate assistant, Wilkerson developed and implemented the training regimen for the sprinters and was the recruiting coordinator; duties he continues to spearhead as a full-time member of the department.
"I have enjoyed my past two years at Marietta and feel that it is a perfect fit for me," said Wilkerson. "I love the sport of track & field and I feel blessed to be in this profession of teaching other men and women about it."
Wilkerson, a business administration major at Wilmington, earned his Master of Education at Marietta College in 2008.

Rick Maib
Assistant Coach
Rick Maib begins his second year as an assistant coach with the Marietta College cross country and track & field programs.
Maib, a 1998 graduate of Central Washington University, located in Ellensburg, Washington, was a four-year standout with the Wildcats, earning four varsity letters in track. He was also a NAIA National Qualifier in the pole vault.
Maib has a total of a 13 years experience coaching track and cross country. He has spent most of his time working with sprinters and jumpers. Maib has coached a number of conference champions, school-record holders and state qualifiers. During his time as head cross country coach at Naches High School from 1998-2004, he coached his team to a state championship by one of the largest margins in state history. For his effort, Maib was awarded the Washington State Cross Country Coach of the Year.
Maib earned his Bachelor of Science in physical education in 1998. He will continue to work toward his Masters of Arts in education at Marietta College this fall.

Felecia Simms
Assistant Coach
Felecia Simms begins her second year as an assistant coach with the Marietta College track & field program. Last year, she guided four of her throwers to an individual OAC title.
Simms, a 2006 graduate of Bethany College, located in Lindsborg, Kansas, was a four-year standout and captain with the Swedes, earning 4 varsity letters in track and a collection of Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) awards, including the KCAC champion in the hammer throw as a senior.
Simms, an Oklahoma native, brings 16 years of competitive throwing experience to Marietta. While at Bethany, she qualified and competed in five NAIA Track & Field Championships—three in the weight throw and two in the hammer throw. Simms graduated as the school record holder in both the weight throw and hammer throw.
In addition to athletics, Simms was active in Alpha Theta Chi, Greek Council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She also volunteered at numerous community events during her collegiate career.
Simms, who earned her Bachelor of Arts in K-12 health and physical education in 2006, spent the 2006-07 school year as a 7-12 grade health and physical education teacher at Anderson County Junior/High School in Garnett, Kansas. She was the head coach of the boy’s junior high team as well as the throws coach for the high school.
Simms began working toward her Masters of Arts in education at Marietta College in 2007.
