Marietta women climb back to .500 with 6-3 win over Shawnee State
Dowd and Reed win third straight doubles match together

MARIETTA, Ohio — For the first time this season, the Marietta College women's tennis team was forced inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center for a match because of bad weather. The change of scenery did not hamper the Pioneers, who won their third match in the last four opportunities, defeating visiting non-conference foe Shawnee State University 6-3 Friday (April 11) afternoon. Marietta improved to 3-3 on the season, while Shawnee State fell to 6-3.

Marietta opened by taking two of three in doubles play. Junior Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) and sophomore Lauren McKiernan (Parkersburg, W.Va./South) made quick work of their opponent, winning 8-2. The tandem of senior Stephanie Dowd (Willoughby/Willoughby South) and freshman Kristina Reed (Grove City) also won 8-6 at third doubles, their third straight win when playing together.

Then, Carraher cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles, while McKiernan held on to win 6-2, 7-5 at second singles. Reed also won her third singles match, 6-3, 6-0. Marietta's final point came from sophomore Jen Wolfe (Ravenswood, W.Va.), who won in a pro set, 8-4, at fifth singles.

Marietta returns to action and Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play on Saturday (April 12) afternoon when the Pioneers visit Berea, Ohio, for a 1 p.m. match with host Baldwin-Wallace College.
