AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office announced its 2008 Softball Academic All-OAC winners on Monday (May 19) morning and two Marietta College softball players received recognition. Sophomore catcher Katie Woolf (Louisville) earned Academic All-OAC, while senior center fielder Krista Huffman (Woodsfield/Monroe Central) picked up Academic All-OAC honorable mention.

Marietta softball gains regional recognition for fourth straight season

MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Region Softball Teams were released late Tuesday (May 6) afternoon, and Marietta College had two players receive regional recognition. Junior first baseman Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) and sophomore catcher Katie Woolf (Louisville) both earned third team All-Central Region honors for their efforts this spring.

Marietta softball closes season with sweep of Bethany
Pioneers win 2-0 and 11-2 to finish year 21-13

April 29, 2008
BETHANY, W.Va. — Marietta College seniors Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone), Krista Huffman (Woodsfield/Monroe Central) and Nikki Veigel (Canton/South) closed out their careers on a winning note thanks to a pair of victories, 2-0 and 11-2, over host Bethany (W.Va.) College Tuesday (April 29) afternoon. The Pioneers finished the year 21-13, while the Bison fell to 19-21. The three Marietta seniors finished their career as the winningest class in school history, compiling a 104-61 (.630) record.

Marietta out hit Bethany 9-3 in the opener and did all of its damage in the first three frames. Junior Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley), who finished 2-for-4, led off the first with a double and scored on a double by sophomore Katie Woolf (Louisville), who finished the season with 29 RBI, which ranks fourth in single-season history.

Marietta softball drops two extra-inning games to John Carroll on Senior Day
Pioneers eliminated from OAC Tournament picture with 6-4 and 7-5 losses

April 26, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team had its goal of making a fourth straight Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament denied when visiting John Carroll University took game one of a doubleheader at Marietta Field Saturday (April 26) afternoon. The Blue Streaks outlasted the Pioneers 6-4 in 12 innings. The win, combined with Ohio Northern University’s sweep of Capital University, allowed John Carroll to secure the fourth and final seed in the upcoming OAC Tournament. The Blue Streaks then cemented their tournament hopes with a 7-5, 8-inning victory in the nightcap.

With the two losses, Marietta fell to 19-13, 9-9 in the OAC. John Carroll improved to 17-19, 11-7 in league play.

A home run from Jamie Smrdel gave John Carroll an early 1-0 lead in the fourth. Marietta freshman Cassady Busellato (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) singled through the right side to plate junior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) and tie the game in the fifth.

Marietta sweeps Wilmington 1-0 and 5-0 on Community Softball Day
Faulkner and Strong both throw complete game shutouts

April 23, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team successfully completed a doubleheader sweep of visiting Wilmington College on Wednesday (April 23) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Lady Pioneers treated the capacity crowd on hand for Softball Community Day to two shutouts of the Quakers, winning game one 1-0 and taking the nightcap 5-0. The wins improved Marietta’s record to 19-11 overall and 9-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Wilmington fell to 9-27 overall and 2-14 in the OAC.

The sweep also keeps the Pioneers’ chances alive for an OAC Tournament berth. The Pioneers will need to sweep visiting John Carroll University on Saturday (April 26) and then hope that Ohio Northern University can sweep Capital University. That scenario will enable the Pioneers to secure the No. 4 seed in the OAC Tournament which will be played May 2-3 at No. 1 seed Muskingum College.

Marietta's Faulkner named OAC Pitcher of the Week
Junior no-hit Heidelberg on Saturday

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its weekly awards for the week ending on April 20, and Marietta College junior softball standout Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) was named OAC Pitcher of the Week.

Faulkner went 2-1 with a 0.93 earned run average in three appearances during the week. She allowed four runs (two earned) on 11 hits with three walks and 17 strikeouts.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Rain and wet field conditions have forced the cancellation of Marietta College's softball doubleheader at home against Kenyon College on Sunday (April 20) afternoon. No make-up date has been determined at this time. Community Day activities have been pushed back until Wednesday (April 23) afternoon when the Pioneers play host to Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) rival Wilmington College at 3:30 p.m.

Faulkner pitches no-hitter in game one victory

TIFFIN, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team kept its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament hopes alive with a sweep of host Heidelberg College Saturday (April 19) afternoon. The Lady Pioneers won game one 8-0 and game two 9-3. The wins improved Marietta’s record to 17-11 overall and 7-7 in the OAC. Heidelberg dropped to 6-24 overall and 2-12 in the OAC.

Junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) pitched a no-hitter for the Pioneers in the opener, going seven innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Faulkner (11-6) retired 21-of-23 Heidelberg batters. Freshman Amanda Strong (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) won the nightcap, going all seven innings. Strong (6-3) gave up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Pioneers win game one 3-1 but fall 5-3 in nightcap

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team split a twinbill with Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe Capital University on Tuesday (April 15) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Pioneers captured game one 3-1 but fell in the nightcap 5-3. Marietta’s record is now 15-11 overall and 5-7 on the OAC. Capital improved to 19-12, 8-4 in the OAC.

In game one, junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) pitched all seven innings to obtain her 10th win of the season. Faulkner (10-6) gave up one run on eight hits with one walk and a career-high 10 strikeouts in the win. She would also come on in relief of game two and took loss after she gave up three runs in the seventh.

Pioneers win both games 9-6; second game lasts eight innings

BEREA, Ohio — Marietta College softball swept a doubleheader from host Baldwin-Wallace College on Saturday (April 12) afternoon at the Cuyahoga Count Fairgrounds. The Pioneers won game one 9-6 and the matched the result with a 9-6 victory in eight innings to snap a six-game Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) losing streak and improve to 14-10, 4-6 in the Conference. The Yellow Jackets fell to 12-16, 2-8 in the OAC.

Junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) earned both wins on the day, improving her record to 9-5. In game one, she pitched all seven innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on 13 hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Amanda Strong (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) got the start in game two and pitched the first three innings, giving up five runs on six hits. Faulkner came on in the fourth and threw the final five frames, giving up one run on four hits.

Marietta looks to get back on track Saturday at Baldwin-Wallace

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team suffered a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) road losses at No. 18 Mount Union Wednesday (April 9) afternoon. The Purple Raiders won game one 7-2 and then got a walk-off hit to win the nightcap 3-2. The losses drop Marietta’s record to 12-10 overall and 2-6 in the OAC. The Pioneers have now lost six straight OAC games. Mount Union improves to 25-3 overall and 8-0 in the OAC.

Junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) was credited with the loss in game one. Faulkner (7-5) pitched six innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Lindsey Royer earned the win for the Purple Raiders, improving her record to 15-2.

Polar Bears win 4-1 and 11-1

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team dropped two games to visiting Ohio Northern University Saturday (April 5) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Polar Bears won game one 4-1 and then took game two 11-1 in five innings. The wins improved Ohio Northern’s record to 14-6 overall and 5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Marietta fell to 12-8 overall and 2-4 in the OAC.

Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) took the loss in game one. Faulkner (7-4) allowed four runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings. Cortney Cash (7-3) earned the win for Ohio Northern, giving up one run on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Errors prove costly as Marietta swept by rival Muskingum
Muskies win key OAC twinbill 2-0 and 6-4

April 2, 2008
NEW CONCORD, Ohio — Marietta College's bid to upset Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) rival Muskingum College on Wednesday (April 2) afternoon did not go as planned, as the Fighting Muskies took advantage of costly Pioneer errors in both games to sweep the doubleheader, 2-0 and 6-4, at Muskingum Field. The Fighting Muskies, who have won 10 straight OAC Tournament titles, improved to 13-5 overall and 4-0 in the OAC. The Pioneers, who have fallen to the Muskies in the last two OAC Tournament championship games, fell to 12-6, 2-2 in league play.

Game one was a pitchers duel between Marietta junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) and Muskingum junior Amy Mattin. Mattin shut out the Pioneers on four hits while walking one and striking out seven to improve to 7-3. Faulkner (7-3) held the Muskies off the scoreboard through the first five innings. In the sixth, Muskingum opened with a single and advanced the runner to second with a sacrifice. The next hitter singled to left. The ball got away from Marietta, allowing the first run of the game to score. The batter also moved to third when the relay was thrown away. Muskingum scored the final run when the next hitter delivered a sacrifice fly.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Sophomore Katie Woolf (Louisville) blasted a walk-off three-run home run to give the Marietta College softball team a 6-4 come-from-behind victory in game one against visiting Otterbein College Saturday (March 29) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Lady Pioneers would then overcome a four- run deficit in game two to win 6-5. The wins improve Marietta's record to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Otterbein falls to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.

Otterbein got to Marietta starter Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) for single runs in the second and third inning. The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the third to pull within a run, 2-1. Junior Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) had a two-out single. She moved to second on a single by Faulkner and then scored on a RBI single by Woolf.

Pioneers defeat Fighting Scots 5-1 and 9-1 in non conference doubleheader

MARIETTA, Ohio — Junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) had a day to remember Tuesday (March 25) afternoon as she led the Marietta College softball team to a pair of victories over visiting College of Wooster at Marietta Field. Faulkner threw a complete game two-hitter and slugged a two-run homer in the opener, a 5-1 victory for the Pioneers. She then drilled two more home runs in a 9-1 win for her team in the nightcap. Marietta improved to 10-4, while Wooster fell to 9-7.

The Pioneers out hit the Fighting Scots 8-2 and each team had an error in the first game. Marietta then out hit Wooster, who had the only error, 14-5 in the second game.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning of the nightcap to secure a 7-5 victory and the doubleheader split with visiting Denison University Thursday (March 20) afternoon in the Pioneers' home opener at Marietta Field. The Big Red used a fast start to win the opener 5-3. The split moves the Pioneers' record to 8-4, while Denison is now 7-1 on the spring.

Marietta junior pitcher Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) suffered the loss in game one after allowing five runs on eight hits in seven innings. She bounced back to get the win in the nightcap with 3 2/3 innings of strong relief. In game two, Faulkner, who improved to 5-2, scattered two runs (one earned) on five hits. She finished with two strikeouts and one walk on the day.

The victories improve Marietta’s record to 7-3. Hiram falls to 4-6 and Manhattanville drops to 2-8.

Junior right-hander Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) recorded her fourth straight win and her second complete-game shutout in game one. Faulkner (4-1) pitched all seven innings, giving up no runs on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team completed its second two-game sweep in three days, as its defeated SUNY-Cortland (N.Y.) 3-2 in its second game at the Rebel Spring Games. Marietta won its early morning game over Lake Forest (Ill.) 8-3. The win improves Marietta’s record to 5-3 and is the fourth straight for the Pioneers. Cortland State drops to 5-2.

Freshman Amanda Strong (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) made the most of her second career start by pitching six innings and only allowing two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) entered the game in the seventh in relief to get three straight outs and pick her first save of the year.

Junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) scored her third win of the week by pitching another complete game; she carried a no hitter into the fifth inning. Faulkner (3-1) completed seven innings, giving up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and six walks. The junior also went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, a sacrifice fly and two RBI in the game.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team earned two more victories on Tuesday (March 11) morning at the Rebel Spring Games. The Pioneers began the day by defeating No. 15 Coe (Iowa), 1-0, and then topped SUNY-Oneonta (N.Y.) 9-0 in six innings. The wins improve Marietta’s record to 3-3 on the young season.

Junior Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) led of the bottom of the fourth with a walk. Junior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire), who was making her first start of the season, then came up with a sacrifice bunt to move McComb over to second. A wild pitch allowed McComb to advance to third. Sophomore Katie Woolf (Louisville) then singled to give junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) all she would need to fend off the Kohawks. Senior Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) had two singles and finished 2-for-3 in the win.

Faulkner earns win against Anderson

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Even though the Marietta College softball team was safely away from the Ohio snow, its effects were still felt down in Kissimmee, Florida. The Lady Pioneers were scheduled to play Denison University from Granville, Ohio, in the first game of a doubleheader Monday (Mar. 10) morning. The weather in Ohio kept Denison from making the 9 a.m. start time, so Marietta squared off against Anderson (Ind.) University and then took on Simpson (Iowa) in their regularly scheduled game. The Pioneers took care of business against the Ravens, winning 4-1, but the Storm proved too much, as they downed the Pioneers 14-0 in five innings.

Anderson (1-2) would score a run in the first inning to take an early lead. That was the last time an Anderson would cross home plate, as Marietta (1-3) junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) would pitch a beauty in her second start of the season. Faulkner (1-1) threw a complete game, giving up one run on four hits with one strikeout and four walks.

Lady Pioneers play two more games on Monday

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team opened the 2008 season by losing its first two games Sunday (March 9) afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games held in Kissimmee, Florida. Husson (Maine) claimed the first game, 9-4. Benedictine (Ill.) then bested Marietta, 14-13, in eight innings.

Marietta (0-2) fell behind early to Husson (1-1); it trailed 4-1 after the first two innings. A four-run top of the fourth for Husson stretched its lead to 8-2. Junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) opened the bottom of the fourth with a double to right center. Freshman Ashley Eberhardt (Massillon/Tuslaw) followed up with a single to put two on. Senior Krista Huffman (Woodsfield/Monroe Central) hit a double to right center, driving in her first two runs of the 2008 campaign. Those two runs would be the last that the Lady Pioneers would score. Husson would add another run in the sixth on its way to winning 9-4.

Lady Pioneers begin another pursuit of an OAC title

MARIETTA, Ohio — With the success of the 2007 season in the books, the Marietta College softball team is ready for another stellar season in 2008. Under the direction of Jeanne Arbuckle, who will begin her 21st season as head softball coach, the Pioneers are looking to build off their most successful season in school history, which ended with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a second place finish in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament and an overall record of 34-12.

Following the loss of four seniors, the Pioneers will rely heavily on their veteran junior and senior players throughout the 2008 season. With eight returning letterwinners and a host of talented freshmen and sophomores, the Pioneers are looking to make another run for the OAC title.

Pioneer softball to host youth pitching clinic on January 27

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College Softball is hosting its annual Pioneer Pitching Clinic on Sunday (Jan. 27) at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. [Register today (.pdf)]

A session for beginners in grades 4-8 is scheduled from 12:30-2:00. The intermediate/advanced session for grades 9-12 is scheduled from 2:30-4:00. Cost is $40 and includes a t-shirt. Amy Kyler, who has pitched professionally and currently serves as the head coach at Notre Dame College in Cleveland is the featured clinician. Marietta head coach Jeanne Arbuckle, pitching coach Sally Friend and current Pioneer players will also assist with the clinic.
