Five inductees to make up MC's 24th Hall of Fame class

MARIETTA, Ohio — February 10, 2007, will mark the induction of five former Pioneer standouts into the 24th class of the Marietta College Athletics Hall of Fame. The ceremony will once again highlight the Winter Weekend festivities.

This year's inductees include basketball standout Robert Young '51, women's basketball and field hockey pioneer Tina Thomas '78, three-time All-Region baseball star and long time assistant coach Bill Mosca '78 and Way-Weigelt award winners Bob Eddy '94 and Curt Weikart '96.

The Hall of Fame Banquet to be held Saturday evening in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center caps off a busy weekend at Marietta College, that includes a collegiate track & field meet as well as a men's and women's varsity basketball game, while also featuring a women's basketball and volleyball alumni games.

This year's class raises the Hall of Fame membership to 124. Here is a look at the 2007 inductees:

J. Robert Young
Class of 1951
Basketball

Young, who laced up his sneakers from 1947-51, was Marietta College's most prolific scorer during the first half of the 20th century. Young, who by NCAA rules was unable to participate in varsity competition as a freshman, earned three varsity letters with the Pioneers.

At the time of his graduation in 1951, Young accumulated a school-record 807 points. As a junior, he led Marietta in scoring with 305 points. That year, the Pioneers finished 14-7, its best record since winning the Ohio Athletic Conference in 1935-36, and led all Ohio colleges and universities in scoring, averaging 70.1 points. As a senior, Young averaged a team-high 16.8 points and helped Marietta finish 13-8.

Young was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity, M-Club and Student Senate, where he served as Vice President during his senior year. He was also a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary for three years.

Following graduation, Young played some semi-professional basketball in the Toledo/Detroit area, while getting his start at DeVilbiss, an automotive refinishing company. Young, who spent 40 years with the company and last served as the Southern Regional Manager, won several sales awards & regional awards.

Young and his wife, Darlene, live in Dunwoody, Ga. They have two children, Jeffery and Debra; both also reside in Georgia.  

Tina Thomas
Class of 1978
Basketball, Field Hockey

Thomas earned three varsity letters in both basketball and field hockey at Marietta after transferring from Ohio Dominican as a sophomore.

Thomas was a captain for two years on the basketball team and she was among the team leaders in rebounding and assists. She was also a dependable free-throw shooter. In field hockey, Thomas, a defender, was also a two-year captain. While at Marietta, she helped start the slow-pitch softball team, although it did not become a varsity sport until after she graduated.

Outside of athletics, Thomas was an active member of the Tri Sigma sorority, the Athletic Advisory Committee, Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Women's Athletic Association.

Upon graduation, Thomas, a petroleum engineering major, earned a Jurist Doctorate from the South Texas College of Law. Over the last 25 years, Thomas has accumulated a diversified background in the gas and oil industry, including 10 years working with energy policy, regulations and research in Washington, D.C.

Thomas currently works as a court appointed mediator and contracts consultant in her hometown of Marietta. She is a member of the St. Mary's Catholic School Board and Marietta Youth Soccer board. Thomas and her husband, Ron Tomasch, have two children, Yogi (7) and Natalie (5).

Bill Mosca
Class of 1978
Baseball
Coach: Baseball, Football

Mosca was a three-time All-OAC and All-Mideast Region selection for the Marietta College baseball team. The first baseman was one of the few two-year captains under legendary coach Don Schaly.

Mosca, a three-year letterman helped the Pioneers win two OAC and Mideast Regional titles as well as achieve a national runner-up finish in 1978. He is among a growing group of players to hold a share of the single-game record for doubles with three.

Following his playing career, Mosca served as a student assistant under Schaly in 1979 and returned as the assistant coach from 1986-94. During that time, he was also a defensive back coach for the football team for five seasons. While an assistant with the Etta Express, the longest serving assistant during Schaly's tenure, Mosca help guide Marietta to nine OAC titles, four Mideast Regional crowns and a 1986 National Championship.

Since leaving Marietta, Mosca has worked various jobs in the Worthington School system, including basketball coach and athletic director. The Paterson, N.J., native is currently the Dean of Students for Worthington schools.

Mosca and his wife, Mary, have two children, Matt and Annie. They live in Delaware, Ohio.

Bob Eddy
Class of 1994
Baseball

Eddy, the 1994 Jack Rafeld OAC Player of the Year, was a four-year letterman on the Marietta College baseball team. While wearing the pinstripes, he was twice named first team All-American and earned All-OAC and All-Mideast Region honors three times.

The shortstop and captain was awarded the prestigious Way-Weigelt Award as a senior before signing a professional contract with the Ohio Valley Redcoats of the independent Frontier League, where he played one year. Eddy then served as an assistant coach with the Etta Express in 1995.

Also in 1995, Eddy was hired as a deputy sheriff with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, a position he still holds. Eddy, the 2000 Deputy of the Year, has worked as the DARE Officer for the past two years and teaches in 12 elementary schools throughout Washington County.

The Woodsfield, Ohio, native also coached the Marietta American Legion team for three years, as well as one year with the Marietta Bantam League and two seasons with the Cambridge T-Ball League.

He and his wife, Melissa, live in Cambridge with their three children, Sarah (10), Andrew (8) and Emily (6).

Curt Weikart
Class of 1996
Football

Weikart, a Way-Weigelt Award winner, earned four varsity letters as a running back on the Pioneers' football team. The two-time captain and three-time All-OAC award winner is the only Pioneer to be named the Mike Gregory OAC Offensive Back of the Year — a feat he accomplished in 1995 after rushing for a conference-best 1,089 yards and 16 touchdowns to help lead the Pioneers to an 8-1-1 record and top-10 ranking in the final national poll. Weikart played in the All-American Bowl in Minneapolis, Minn., after his senior season.

When Weikart graduated, he held the school record for touchdowns (18) and points (108) in a season. He also sat second all-time in touchdowns (33), points (198), rushing attempts (819) and rushing yards (3,339). Now, Weikart is third in career rushing attempts, while fourth in career touchdowns, points and rushing yards.

Following graduation, the Salem, Ohio, native coached football for season at his former high school, Columbiana, and worked as a radio frequency technician for Verizon Wireless in Detroit, Mich., for four years. Since 1999, he has worked as a systems engineer for Integrated Technical Services.

He and his wife, Dana, live in Raleigh, N.C., and are involved in different events to help raise money for MS research and the American Cancer Society. Weikart has also worked with the Challenged Athletes Foundation the last two years.
