Pioneer men fall to host Capital 4-3 in double overtime
Marietta visits Wilmington Wednesday at 7 p.m.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with host Capital University on Saturday (Oct. 18) afternoon, but the Crusaders pulled out a 4-3, double overtime victory to remain in sole possession of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The win improved Capital's record to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the OAC. Marietta fell to 7-4-3, 2-2-1 in league play.
The Pioneers found themselves down 1-0 midway through the second minute when Steven McCarthy finished a loose ball in front of the box for the Capital goal.
Junior forward Kyle Muth (Twinsburg) tied the game in the 19th minute with his seventh goal of the season. Junior midfielder Matt Sleyzak (Twinsburg) assisted the goal with a feed forward, leading to the breakaway goal.
McCarthy added his second goal of the game in the 37th minute to give Capital back the lead 2-1. This time, he scored off a rebound from the keeper.
Senior forward Seita Kawamoto (Ebina, Kanagaua, Japan) knotted the game at 2-2 with a score in the 72nd minute. Kawamoto received a pass from the left side of the box from senior teammate Drew Craig (Slippery Rock, Pa.) and beat the keeper with a shot in front of the goal.
Marietta took its first lead of the day minutes later when junior defender Delè Adedapo (Gahanna/Bexley) scored his eighth goal of the year. Senior forward Jack Dunn (Aurora/University) set up the goal with a pass from the corner to the left corner of the box, and Adedapo finished with a low shot past the defense and into the back of the net at the 75:27 mark.
Capital fought back to tie the game at 3-3 in the 79th minute when Daniel McCarthy scored a goal on free kick from just outside the box that found an opening inside the far post.
The score remained locked at 3-3 through the first overtime and until the 108th minute when McCarthy scored his third goal of the match. Lewis Black was able to redirect a ball in the box to the head of McCarthy, who beat the keeper for the game-winner.
Marietta out-shot Capital 26-24 overall and both teams had 12 shots on goal. Senior Steve Hagenau (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) finished with eight saves in the loss, while John Snyder had nine saves in the win.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back on Wednesday (Oct. 22) night when they travel to Wilmington for a 7 p.m. match-up with the host Quakers. |
