Marietta men's soccer falls 4-3 to host Hiram in overtime
Pioneers open OAC play on Saturday at home against Heidelberg

Sept. 30, 2008
HIRAM, Ohio — Two of the Great Lakes Region's top teams went head-to-head in a non-conference battle Tuesday (Sept. 30) afternoon with host Hiram College pulling out a 4-3, overtime win against visiting Marietta College. The Terriers, ranked sixth in this week's NSCAA/Adidas Regional Rankings, improved to 8-2, while the Pioneers, ranked ninth in the same poll, fell to 5-2-2.

Marietta took a 1-0 advantage in the seventh minute after senior forward Jack Dunn (Aurora/University) drew a foul in the box and junior defender Delè Adedapo (Gahanna/Bexley) converted the penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season.

The score remained the same until the 47th minute when Hiram tied the game at 1-1. Junior forward Kyle Muth (Twinsburg) put Marietta back on top by one with his fifth goal of the fall in the 56th minute. Muth was able to chip the ball over the keeper's head for the score.

Hiram answered 27 seconds later with its second goal of the game. A Terrier player sent a cross into the box that was bobbled by Pioneers senior goalkeeper Steve Hagenau (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) and ruled to have crossed into the goal before he regained control. Hiram then took a 3-2 lead in the 75th minute before the teams had to endure a 40-minute lightening delay with 7:30 to play in regulation.

Once play resumed, Adedapo sent the game into overtime with his second goal of the game and fifth of the season. This time, he bent a ball on a free kick just outside the box and into the back of the net with just 47 second left on the clock.

Hiram, however, took advantage of a Marietta foul in the box to end the game with a penalty kick goal in the 94th minute giving the Terriers the 4-3 victory.

Marietta out-shot Hiram 12-9 overall and 8-7 in shots on goal. Hagenau made three saves in the game, while his counterpart, Marc Windham, had five.

The Pioneers now turn their attention to Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play, which will begin on Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon when Heidelberg College visits Marietta Field for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

Delè Adedapo
