Thomas More ends Marietta's unbeaten streak with 2-1 victory at Marietta Field
Pioneers fall to 5-1-2 on the season

Sept. 28, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — Visiting Thomas More (Ky.) College scored two unanswered goals on Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon to pull off the 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten Marietta College at Marietta Field. The loss dropped the Pioneers' record to 5-1-2 and snapped a school-record tying seven game unbeaten streak. Marietta also went seven games without a loss in 1996 (4-0-3) and again in 2002 (7-0-0). The Saints improved to 7-1 on the year.

It was a tale of two halves for Marietta, who dominated the possession in the first half. The Pioneers out-shot the Saints 9-4 in the frame, but the game headed into intermission tied at 1-1.

Marietta took the lead first with a goal in 34th minute. Junior defender Dan Cawley (Marietta) began the scoring play with a cross from midfield to the foot of junior forward Deric McDonald (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) just outside the six-yard box. McDonald then gave a one-touch pass to junior forward Kyle Muth (Twinsburg) on the other side of the box, and Muth fired the ball into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Thomas More evened the score in the 35th minute. John Jonas received pass from the corner from teammate Mark Uhl and scored on a shot over the head of Marietta senior goalkeeper Steve Hagenau (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) from 15-yards out and into the left side of the net.

The Saints came out in the second half and took control of the ball, out-shooting the Pioneers 13-7 in the final frame. The offensive attack finally came through in the 88th minute when Aaron Osborne got a thru ball from Dan Miller, which drew Hagenau out of the six-yard box. Osborne calmly placed a shot out of Hagenau's reach and into the back side of the net to give Thomas More the 2-1 victory.

Thomas More finished with 17 shots, nine on goal. Marietta had 16 total shots, including eight shots on goal. Both Hagenau and Matt Koopman collected seven saves in the game.

The Pioneers will look to bounce back on Tuesday (Sept. 30) afternoon when they travel to Hiram for a 4 p.m. kickoff with the 7-2 Terriers.
