MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team, who is off to its best start since Head Coach Patrick Holguin took over the program in 1998, climbed into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Rankings Tuesday (Sept. 23) afternoon when the organization's week four poll was released. The Pioneers were voted sixth in the 10-team regional poll. [Great Lakes Regional Poll]
Marietta, who received votes in the previous poll, improved to 5-0-2 and tied the school record for longest unbeaten streak after a pair of one-goal victories last week. The Pioneers defeated then-ranked sixth Kenyon College, 2-1, on the road Wednesday (Sept. 17) and then held off visiting Saint Vincent (Pa.) College, 3-2, Saturday (Sept. 20). Marietta matched the feat set in 1996 when it went 4-0-3. The team also won seven straight in 2002.
The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) had three other schools make the top 10 with Capital University (5-1-0) holding onto the top spot for the second straight week. In addition, Baldwin-Wallace College (7-0-0) was ranked second and John Carroll University (4-2-0) was ranked 10th.
Marietta will look to break the record for longest unbeaten streak and continue to build momentum before OAC play begins next week when the Pioneers play host to non-conference foe Thomas More (Ky.) College on Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon at 2 p.m. |
