Kawamoto named OAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Senior scored two game-winning goals to help Marietta stay undefeated in 2008
Sept. 22, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — On Monday (Sept. 22) afternoon, the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its weekly awards for the period of Sept. 15-20, and Marietta College senior forward Seita Kawamoto (Ebina, Kanagaua, Japan) earned Men’s Soccer Player of the Week honors.
Thanks in part to Kawamoto, the Pioneers improved to 5-0-2 and tied the school record for longest unbeaten streak. Marietta matched the feat set in 1996 when it went 4-0-3. The team also won seven straight in 2002.
Kawamoto, playing his first season of soccer with the Pioneers, scored a dramatic, game-winning goal in both of Marietta's wins last week. Coming off the bench at regionally ranked Kenyon College, he received the ball near the top of the box in the 88th minute. Kawamoto then beat the last Lord defender and scored on a left-footed shot inside the near post to give the Pioneers the 2-1 victory. The goal was Kawamoto's first of the year.
Then on Saturday, Kawamoto sealed a 3-2 Marietta comeback win against visiting Saint Vincent (Pa.) College with another game-winner in the 77th minute. He ran down a loose ball just outside the 18-yard box and was able to beat the last Bearcat defender and then Saint Vincent's goalkeeper with a shot inside the near post for the goal, his second of the year.
Marietta will look to break the record for longest unbeaten streak and continue to build momentum before Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play begins next week when the Pioneers play host to non-conference foe Thomas More (Ky.) College on Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon at 2 p.m. |
