Sept. 6, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — For the second straight outing, the Marietta College men's soccer team had to settle with 1-1 tie. The latest came on Saturday (Sept. 6) evening against Walsh University in the first round of the Marietta Soccer Classic at Marietta Field.
The game was called after just one overtime because of darkness. The Cavaliers will advance to play Christopher Newport (Va.) University in the Marietta College Classic championship after defeating the Pioneers 5-4 on penalty kicks. Marietta's record now stands at 1-0-2; Walsh is 1-2-1.
Walsh's Alex Birtcher opened up the scoring by hammering home a shot from the top of the 18-yard box to the far corner. Marietta answered back 16 minutes later after senior midfielder Jack Dunn (Aurora/University) scored his third goal in three games. This one came on a penalty kick after he drew a foul in the box.
Senior goalkeeper Tad Cochran (Westerville/Worthington Christian) recorded seven saves on the day in his first start of the season. Walsh goalkeeper Ben Pflum was credited with eight saves. The Pioneers out-shot the Cavaliers 19-13, including 9-8 in shots on goal.
Marietta will play Westminster (Pa.) at 11 a.m. in Sunday's consolation match. Walsh will play Christopher Newport (Va.), who defeated Westminster 3-1, in the final at 3 p.m. |
