Marietta's Davis named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Football
Junior safety voted to second team by members of CoSIDA

Nov. 7, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released their 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Football Teams on Thursday (Nov. 6) morning, and Marietta College junior defensive back George Davis (Warren/Newton Falls) was named to the second team in District IV.

Davis, who converted from running back to strong safety in 2008, currently ranks second on the Pioneers’ defense in total tackles with 55; he leads the squad with 37 solo hits. Davis has added 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks this season. He posted a game-high and career-high 11 stops in Marietta’s win over rival Muskingum College in week eight. Davis also led the Pioneers in total tackles against Wilmington College and Baldwin-Wallace College earlier in the year. In addition to leading the defensive secondary, Davis has also spent time returning kickoffs in 2008. The junior has averaged 23.7 yards on 13 returns this season.

Off the field, Davis maintains a 3.49 grade point average as a Petroleum Engineering major. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Sports Information Directors from the district (all NCAA Division II, III and NAIA schools in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama) nominate and vote on selections with first team all-district selections moving onto the national ballot. In order to qualify a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key reserve.

The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

Marietta football continues its 2008 season on Saturday (Nov. 8) afternoon when the Pioneers play host to Heidelberg College in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Don Drumm Stadium. Saturday will be Marietta’s annual Shrine Game. All proceeds from the gate and concessions will go to the Marietta Shrine Club.
