Blue vs. White champions crowned as Marietta baseball wraps up fall
Pioneers prepare to make another run at OAC, Regional and National titles in 2009

Oct. 30, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College Baseball program completed its 2008 fall season Friday (Oct. 24) with the conclusion of its annual Blue vs. White playoff series. It was a very active and productive fall for Marietta baseball players, particularly the newcomers, as nearly the entire roster played in over 25 games during the past two months.

The fall began with the Greater Marietta Fall Baseball League, a four team community league which played its 25th season. The GMFBL featured an 11-game regular season schedule and double-elimination playoff tournament. The regular season was extremely competitive with all four teams finishing within a game of each other in the standings. Zide’s Sport Shop took home the GMFBL title with an 11-1 victory over People’s Bank in the championship game. Zide’s was paced by the GMFBL’s leading hitter John Snyder (.548 BA, 8 triples, 18 runs scored), and the league’s top starting pitcher Brian Gasser (3-1, 1.17 ERA). Black’s Tree Service took home third place, while Michael Bradley & Co. finished in fourth.

The Marietta Baseball program participated in its 2008 Blue vs. White fall session during the first four weeks of October, playing 15 games in addition to six full squad practices. The Blue team, led by several underclassmen, triumphed over the White squad with a 10-5 overall record. The playoff series was tied 2-2, but the weather washed out a potential Game 5. Sophomore Britt Meador led the Blue Team’s offense by hitting .409 with a league-high 13 RBI. Freshmen Kyle Lindquist and sophomore Bryce Goldbach each won two games apiece on the mound for Blue, while Logan Lewis was the top pitcher for the White squad, going 2-0 with a 3.50 ERA in five appearances. Junior catcher Danny Jones was White’s top hitter, hitting at a .424 clip.

"Overall, the fall has to be considered a rousing success," Head Coach Brian Brewer said. "It was full of impressive individual performances and team successes, particularly by the Blue Team who overcame several injuries to be crowned 2008 Blue vs. White Champions."

With 10 returning letterman and a talented group of newcomers, expect the Marietta College Baseball program to assert itself as a conference, regional and national contender in 2009.
